Russell is a father of two who was recently granted full custody of his son, he and his girlfriend are also expecting baby number three shortly. Russell has a disability that is the result of a childhood accident preventing him from working. Russell’s girlfriend is in the application stage to receive disability as well due to her own health issues that prevent her from working as well.
You can imagine the excitement when Russell learned he was getting full custody of his son! What you may not imagine is the fear that followed, without a vehicle and living outside of Lincoln transportation has been an ongoing stress for the family. Now they are adding not one but two additional children to the home in a short period of time. This in and of itself is a pretty big adjustment. Now imagine no public transportation in your town, a fixed income so taxi’s and Uber are definitely not in the budget, a second little person with his own needs to address, and a pregnant girlfriend. Walking long distances for his girlfriend or for his young son is also out of the question. A fixed income and additional kiddos mean more mouths to feed and still no money for a car payment.
What is a quickly growing family with vast limitations to do? Well they call mom, Russell’s mother, is called to take them everywhere they need to go such as Russell’s multiple court dates for his son, his girlfriends doctor and prenatal visits, as well as daily tasks like getting groceries and taking the oldest to and from school everyday. While Russell and his family deeply appreciate all of the sacrifices his mother makes to transport his family, one of their goals is being able to transport themselves without mom’s help.
